Panoramas of the World

Wellington II (New Zealand)

Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and thus the most-southern capital in the world. At the southwest coast of the North Island, it is located on the bay Port Nicholson. It also goes by the name of Wind City.

The city is a very important sea port as well as a commercial and industrial centre. In 1840, the place was populated by immigrants from Great Britain, who started working for the New Zealand Company. Wellington replaced Auckland as state capital in 1865. Today, the city has a population of about 165,000 inhabitants, it was named after Duke Wellington, a British commander and statesman. The nearby Mount Victoria offers the best view of Wellington; this panorama picture was taken on its summit.
